social-skills

CREW social skills groups are designed around the needs of our clients. We offer social skills groups for children starting at age 4 and continuing into early adulthood.  Our lessons hinge upon the Social Thinking methodology and programs.  Social Thinking® is a teaching methodology created by Michelle Garcia Winner, consisting of the Social Thinking Vocabulary, social concepts and strategies, original characters, and curricula with specific materials geared to different age ranges spanning preschool children to adults. Learn more at www.socialthinking.com *.

Children who may benefit from social skills groups have average to above average language and cognition.  We serve students with social-learning differences who may or may not have a diagnosis of Autism, ADD/ADHD, Emotional Disturbance, anxiety, or learning disabilities.

Our groups meet once a week for an hour.  45-50 minutes are direct instructional activities with the students, and the final 10-15 minutes are parent education, where your child’s CREW teacher will review what we learned.  Children will be carefully placed into groups of 2-4 students who are similar ages with similar social-emotional needs.

Social skills lessons are based on meaningful group activities in which teachers will guide students to learn about their own thinking, emotions, perspectives of others, and problem-solving skills.  CREW teachers will help children create relationships with each other through fun, engaging lessons. Social skills is not a time to take copious notes and listen. We believe that children learn social skills through practice, which can take form in role play, comic strip conversations, behavior mapping, and video modeling. At times your CREW teacher may arrange social skills group to meet in the community for a social group outing (such as bowling, trampoline park, playground) so children have the opportunity to generalize skills learned in group to other settings.  Our goal is for your child to look forward to their weekly CREW social skills group.
